How much does smart thermostat installation cost in London?

Smart thermostat installation is completely free when it's fitted alongside any of our boiler installation packages — you don't pay separately for it. If your existing boiler is working fine and you just want to upgrade the thermostat on its own, it's a fixed £150, which covers the wiring, receiver pairing, mobile app setup and a full heating system test. Other London installers we've seen charge anywhere from £90 to £400 depending on the brand and whether it's a simple swap or a more involved multi-zone setup — our £150 covers a standard single-zone install for any of the four brands we fit.

Which Smart Thermostat Should You Choose?

Every brand does the basics — remote control from your phone, scheduling, and away-mode. Where they actually differ matters more than the marketing suggests.

Is My Boiler Compatible With a Smart Thermostat?

The vast majority of combi and system boilers installed in the last 15 years work with a smart thermostat. A few things affect how well:

  • OpenTherm compatibility

Most modern Vaillant and Worcester Bosch boilers support OpenTherm, letting the thermostat modulate boiler output precisely rather than just switching it on and off — this gives smoother temperature control and slightly better efficiency.

  • Hot water control wiring

Hive, tado and Honeywell handle hot water scheduling as standard. Google Nest can too, but sometimes needs an additional wiring accessory depending on your existing system — we check this before installing.

  • Older systems & back boilers

Homes still running an old back boiler or gravity-fed system sometimes need extra work before a smart thermostat can be fitted properly. We flag this honestly rather than fitting something that won't work well.

What Happens During Installation

  • 1

    Compatibility check

We confirm your boiler and existing wiring support the thermostat you want before starting any work.

  • 2

Old thermostat removed, new one wired in

The receiver is connected to your boiler and the thermostat is mounted where you want it, wired or wireless depending on the brand.

  • 3

    App pairing & Wi-Fi setup

We connect the thermostat to your home Wi-Fi and pair it with the manufacturer's app on your phone.

  • 4

    Full system test

Heating and hot water are tested together to confirm everything responds correctly before we leave.

  • 5

    Walkthrough of the app

A quick explanation of scheduling, away mode and geofencing so you're not left guessing how to use it.

Will a Smart Thermostat Actually Save You Money?

Manufacturer claims like "save £150 a year" are best-case scenarios, not guarantees — worth knowing before you buy based on the marketing alone. What genuinely saves money is how you use the device, not owning it:

HONEST FACTOR 1

Heating only rooms you use

Multi-zone setups (tado, Honeywell) let you stop heating empty rooms — this is where the real saving comes from.

HONEST FACTOR 2

Not heating an empty house

Geofencing and away-mode stop heating running on a fixed schedule when nobody's home — a common source of waste with old dial thermostats.

HONEST FACTOR 3

One degree lower

Simply lowering your target temperature by one degree typically saves 8-10% on heating costs — free, and easier to stick to with app-based scheduling.

WHAT WON'T

Buying the device alone

If your habits don't change, a smart thermostat set to the same schedule as your old one won't save anything by itself.

Smart Thermostat Installation — Common Questions

Which smart thermostat should I choose: Hive, Nest, or tado?

Hive and tado both offer built-in hot water control alongside heating, which suits most UK homes with a combi boiler. Google Nest focuses on learning your schedule automatically but needs extra wiring for hot water control on some systems. tado's multi-room smart valves are the strongest option if you want to heat individual rooms differently. We'll recommend the right one for your exact boiler and home during a quick WhatsApp chat.

Is my boiler compatible with a smart thermostat?

The vast majority of combi and system boilers installed in the last 15 years are compatible with Hive, tado and Honeywell. Google Nest without the extra wiring accessory doesn't support hot water control on some older systems. Boilers with OpenTherm compatibility, including most modern Vaillant and Worcester Bosch models, get the most precise control since the thermostat can modulate the boiler's output rather than just switching it on and off.

How much can a smart thermostat actually save on heating bills?

Manufacturer figures like "save £150 a year" are best-case estimates and depend heavily on how you use the device. The two things that reliably save money are heating only the rooms you use and avoiding heating an empty house on a fixed schedule. A smart thermostat makes both of these easier to do consistently, but the saving comes from how you use it, not from owning it.

Do you install smart thermostats on their own, without a new boiler?

Yes. If your boiler is working fine and you just want to upgrade the thermostat, we fit Hive, Nest, tado and Honeywell as a standalone job for a fixed £150, including wiring, app pairing and a full system test, usually completed in one visit.
